US Dow Jones plunges over 1000 points

This is why the Dow is plunging Stocks open mixed on Wall Street

The Dow Jones industrials plunged more than 1,000 points Thursday, deepening a weeklong sell-off and dragging the stock market into an official "correction" for the first time in two years as fearful investors sought to get out before their losses mounted.

Though many stock indexes are close to where they started the year, the losses mark a major reverse following a sustained period of gains, a pullback that market pros have been predicting for some time.

That sign of inflation has market participants anxious that the Federal Reserve will increase interest rates, perhaps more aggressively than the three rate hikes already expected for this year.

Shaken out of many months of calm, Wall Street braced for a higher level of volatility in the days ahead, after a roughly 2 percent rebound in USA stocks on Tuesday followed the biggest one-day selloff in more than six years.

The stock market went on a wild ride again on Monday, with the Dow Jones industrial average closing down 1,175 points, its worst point drop in history. With those declines, the indexes confirmed they were in correction territory, both falling more than 10 percent from their January 26 record highs and leaving investors anxious about how much longer the selloff may go.

In Tuesday's trading, high-dividend companies including utility and real estate companies fell, as bond yields increased after a sharp drop on Monday.

Investors anxious that rising wages will hurt corporate profits and could signal an increase in inflation that could prompt the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at a faster pace, putting a brake on the economy. The Dow moved almost 500 points during trading Wednesday before closing down 19 points, or 0.08 percent, at 24,893. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was 2.3 per cent lower at 7,170 while the CAC 40 in France fell 2.2 per cent to 5,171. European stocks saw across-the-board losses, led by Germany's blue-chip DAX, which lost 2.6 percent, or 330 points. Gold, for example, was up 0.5 per cent at $1,343 an ounce.

"Investors are nervous about three things", said Larry Hatheway, an economist and Zurich-based asset manager.

Consider this: The S&P 500 has risen or fallen 1% five times in the past two weeks. The S&P 500, for example, has fallen 7.8 per cent since it set its latest record high on January 26.

US 10-year yields rose back as high as 2.80 percent after approaching two-week lows around 2.65 percent on Tuesday.

In the foreign exchange market, the dollar was flat after earlier hitting two-week highs against a basket of major currencies as investors reduced bearish bets on the greenback.

On Monday, the Dow finished down 4.6 percent while the S&P 500 sank 4.1 percent, to 2,648.94. It has been an uncommonly long time since the last market correction, which ended nearly two years ago. Natural gas gave up 1 cent to $2.70 per 1,000 cubic feet. Amazon rose 2.2 percent. The stock dropped $2.39, or 10.9 percent, to $19.57. Hong Kong's Hang Seng skidded 5.1 percent and South Korea's Kospi declined 1.5 percent.

The Dow was up 264 points, or 1.1 percent, at 24,122. Based on a recent bid, its distance from 20 days simple moving average is -7.46%, and its distance from 50 days simple moving average is -3.49% while it has a distance of 24.85% from the 200 days simple moving average.

About 10.5 billion shares changed hands in US exchanges, well above the 8.2 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions.
