In Interview, Trump Casts Doubt on Palestinians' Desire to Make Peace

Intel Source: Arab States Fed Up with Abbas Opposing Trump In Interview, Trump Casts Doubt on Palestinians' Desire to Make Peace

In the interview with Israel Hayom newspaper, Trump also said he did not believe the Israelis, as well as the Palestinians, were ready to make peace.

Trump stressed his desire to achieve a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' aide Majdi Khalidi on Sunday said that Palestinians will ask Russian President Vladimir Putin to step into a multilateral mechanism to overlook the peace process.

The president was particularly cautious during the campaign not to promise to make peace between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, but rather simply emphasizing how "wonderful" it would be if he could be the one to make "the ultimate deal" by doing so.

He said, "Refraining from recognizing the Palestinian people's legitimate rights to their land and sacred sites, denying them the right to return and expropriating their sovereignty over the land in exchange for a regional peace and normalization with the Arab world is the right way to liquidate the Palestinian cause".

Trump said he was not sure whether there would be peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, but said, "I think it is very foolish for the Palestinians, and I also think it would be very foolish for the Israelis, if they don't make a deal". He added that the settlements "always have complicated making peace, so I think Israel has to be very careful with the settlements". "It's our only opportunity and it will never happen after this", he asserted.

Budget deal ends brief shutdown, but launches fight over immigration, deficit
There had been hopes a new spending bill would be approved by the Republican-controlled Congress before federal funding expired. Congress has been dragging its heels on passing a long-term budget deal, which lead to a short government shutdown last month .

In December, Trump infuriated Palestinians with his decision to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel's capital and relocate the United States embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

Israel claims the whole of the city as its capital but the Palestinians want East Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, to be the capital of a future Palestinian state.

"I think every Jew should welcome this decision by the president", Danon said.

"I wanted to make it clear that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel", he told the newspaper.

"Russia and Putin will have an important role in this matter, including launching an global peace conference and several important issues that require consultation with all relevant parties until we achieve the interest of the Palestinian people", said Khalidi.

Trump clarified a comment he made last month in Davos after meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that his decision on Jerusalem had effectively taken the issue off the table. "I think they are probably as good as they have ever been".
