US Vice President Mike Pence also attended the Games opening ceremony but had no contact with the North Korean delegation.

North Korea agreed to participate in PyeongChang after Games' host South Korea and the International Olympic Committee encouraged the reclusive, heavily-sanctioned state to participate as a gesture of peace.

Washington is not expected to support the initiative - recently the Trump administration has been exerting "maximum pressure" on North Korea to abandon its nuclear programme.

North Korean state media on Monday said its high-level delegation's trip to South Korea was "meaningful" and it improved stalled inter-Korean relations.

Among those who participated in such meetings were the late leader and father of Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-il, and the late former presidents of the South, Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun, respectively.

Pence was reported to have said he reached the new understanding with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who has been pushing for diplomatic solution to the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, in two substantive conversations during his visit to South Korea.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis says "there's no wedge" between the United States and South Korea, despite recent overtures between South Korea and North Korea.

During the ceremony, Pence sat just feet away from Kim Yo Jong and looked stony faced as President Moon twice shook hands with her.

The appearance by the celeb-mimicking pranksters clearly touched a nerve at a politically intense time for the US, North Korea and South Korea.

Pyeongchang. In an historic first, the South Korean President Moon Jae-in welcomed senior North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong Un's younger sister Kim Yo Jong, to Seoul's presidential palace for a lunch meeting Saturday, CNN reports.

"If they all step back at same time, then DPRK's 70th anniversary on September 9, or the 11th anniversary of the Declaration for the Development of Inter-Korean Relations, Peace and Prosperity on October 4, is good timing for the historic meeting", said the professor, who is optimistic about the third summit between the DPRK and South Korean leaders.

The two Koreas remain technically at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

The hardline USA policy is at odds with the more conciliatory approach towards the North favoured by South Korea.

On Saturday, Kim Yo-jong "courteously" handed over a personal letter from the North Korean leader to Mr. Moon and told him of her brother's "intention", North Korea's state news agency KCNA said, without elaborating what that was.

'It is absolutely necessary for the North and the United States to engage in talks at an early date, ' his spokesman said. "And he is encouraging both sides to come together".
