"His incorrect and insensitive comment about Korea's history has enraged many of [Korea's] people", wrote Jung Min-ho in The Korea Times.

Japan's 35-year colonisation of Korea, between 1910 and 1945, was marked by harsh rule and human rights abuse. How can he make such a historically and culturally insensitive comment?

NBC has fired an analyst for a controversial on-air remark that cited Japan as an example that has been important to the South Korea's own transformation. Another asked if NBC would thank Japan for the attacks on Pearl Harbour.

Some say it's questionable whether Ramo has been even following the news leading up to the current Olympics, as some of the disputes between South Korea and Japan erupted even during the preparation phase of the games. As recently as last month Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said that Tokyo could not accept South Korea's demands for additional measures regarding a 2015 bilateral agreement on the issue of Korean women forced to work in Japanese wartime brothels.

For one, the original version of Korea's unified flag, under which North and South Korean players marched under at the opening ceremony, initially included a group of small Korean islets in the East Sea, known as Dokdo in Korean, over which Japan also claims sovereignty.

Cheerleaders of North Korea hold unification flags during the opening ceremony at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium on February 9. The spokesman said Mr Moon also called for a quick resumption of dialogue between the United States and North Korea.

During the recent Winter Olympics opening ceremony which took place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, one of the broadcasters/analysts (Joshua Cooper Ramo) made a statement which offended thousands of Koreans.

The network responded quickly after the backlash, announcing Ramo's assignment with the Olympics is now over, and NBC offered an apology both in writing and during the broadcast.

During the Parade of Nations, Ramo, who was serving as an Asia correspondent for the network, made a comment about how much of an example Japan has been for Korea culturally and technologically.

USA television network NBC Sports has apologized for broadcasting insensitive remarks relating to South Korea during the PyeongChang Winter Games' opening, according to Olympic officials Sunday.

"If the International Olympic Committee does not act on this issue, we will consider that the International Olympic Committee agrees on NBC's stance", the organizers of the petition wrote in a public statement.
