Silent and sphinx-like, Kim's sister steals Pence's diplomatic thunder

Pyeongchang Winter Olympics organisers confirmed on Sunday that the Games had fallen victim to a cyber attack during Friday's opening ceremony, but they refused to reveal the source.

Pence said Friday that the USA would oppose talks between the two Koreas until the North agreed to open negotiations on ending its nuclear program.

Moon received a letter from Kim Jong Un through her sister, in which Pyongyang's leader expressed his willingness to mend ties between the two countries.

"They ignore all freedoms", said Timothy, a North Korean refugee. Also on hand was U.S. Vice President Mike Pence. If peace is not imminent, a summit in Pyongyang between Mr Moon and Kim Jong Un seems better to most than the threats of recent months.

But the agreement made little headway after the North carried out a series of nuclear and missile tests, and after conservative presidents took office in the South, adopting a harder line on Pyongyang.

"I woke up this morning and at 6:30 to go to work and the opening ceremonies were on and I was like oh my God, I think everyone is missing this", says hockey fan Alesha Drew.

The Winter Olympics games are now happening in South Korea but the issue is that while the games are going on, this side of the world is still asleep. "North Korea is probably trying to give the impression that it is taking the lead in dialogue".

Abe and Moon show unity as Winter Games open
The rare meeting began shortly after 11 a.m. and ended at 1:46 p.m., an official from the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said .

South Korean president Moon Jae-in has met North Korean officials, including Kim Jong-un's sister, over lunch at Seoul's presidential palace, a historic event that is the highest level contact between the two nations in more than a decade.

Kim Yo Jong and other North Korean delegates, including the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam, arrived in the South on Friday on Kim Jong Un's private jet and attended the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

The remarks came in response to a previous tweet from Switzerland President Berset, who had tweeted about his one-on-one meeting with South Korean president on February 8.

He said the U.S. would take whatever "action is necessary to defend our homeland" against the North Korean nuclear threat, according to an interview with NBC.

The charity's statement comes after the joint Korean women's ice hockey team and the pro-unification flag show.

But the North was welcomed with open arms to what South Korean President Moon Jae-in called "Olympic games of peace".

If the encounter took place, it would be the first between Kim and a South Korean president, and the first North-South summit on the peninsula since 2007.

The United States has repeatedly pressed China, North Korea's most significant trading partner and main ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang's nuclear and missile ambitions. At the time, the attackers' end goal remained unclear, but security experts across the industry said they have been bracing for what they now describe as an inevitable attack.
