The Johnson County sheriff said a man killed four people and took his own life in a crime that included two crime scenes in eastern Kentucky.

Paintsville authorities received a 911 call at 3:33 p.m. Saturday about a shooting at a residence in the McKenzie Branch community, according to Price.

A witness at the scene told investigators that Nickell escaped in a black Toyota Camry, prompting police to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

Sheriff Price concluded by saying, "In respect, for the victims, we are not releasing any names pending notification of families". Deputies say they could not find the suspect, but later received a tip that his vehicle was on Mill Street in Paintsville. "The lives of four innocent victims were taken".

Five people are dead after a man opened fire in two different residences in Johnson County, Ky. before turning the gun on himself. Sheriff Price led a search of the apartment complex. Police said the gunman apparently took his own life after committing the killings. "I have worked in law enforcement for 34 years", Price said. "This is one of the most disturbing acts of violence I have ever seen", he added. The Johnson County Sheriff´s office and Paintsville police referred all questions to the Kentucky State Police, who were not immediately available for comment.

"As officers, one of our first concerns is for the surviving family members", he concluded.

Nickell was also in the apartment and had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the newspaper reports.
