South Africa: Nelson Mandela Foundation Remembers Madiba's Release
12 February, 2018, 13:50
Zuma and his deputy, the ruling party's new leader, have been meeting behind closed doors on what Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa calls "closure".
Zuma cleared his diary of weekend engagements, but deputy president Ramaphosa is due to speak at a rally in the city on Sunday to start a year of celebrations marking 100 years since Nelson Mandela's birth. Pressure has been mounting on him to quit since Ramaphosa took over the ANC leadership.
Some stark options were to be placed on the table.
Responding to comments on her photo posting from seemingly unhappy South Africans, Madiba-Zuma reiterated her warning about rough times ahead in the defence of her scandal-hit husband.
In a highly fluid and increasingly volatile situation, it appeared Zuma's days in power were down to a handful.
"We want everyone, on Monday, to stay away from work until Zuma steps down", said Maumela.
However Mr Zuma, by then the president of the ANC, went on to win the presidency of the country two weeks later.
Invoking Mandela's legacy, Mr Ramaphosa vowed to tackle corruption and cronyism...
"The ANC calls on its members, supporters and society at large not to heed this irresponsible and reckless call by these individuals who have no mandate to speak on behalf of the ANC or any of its members and structures", Modiba said. That drama is getting serious indeed, with reports of fistfights breaking out this week between the Zuma and Ramaphosa factions of the party.
That last option - which the ANC is referring to as a transition - has been dubbed the nuclear option.
Ruling party leaders are uncomfortable with the idea of backing an opposition motion, fueling speculation that the ANC will make an internal decision to remove Zuma in the same way that President Thabo Mbeki was ousted in 2008 during his second term.
The stalemate over Zuma's departure has left Africa's most developed economy in limbo, with a series of public events cancelled last week including Thursday's State of the Nation address to parliament. This increasingly bitter factional struggle is probably more likely than criticism from outside the party to convince the ANC "top six" that Zuma has to go, sooner rather than later. Like the frustratingly nail-biting wait that presaged the resignation of former Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, the South African "transition" is turning out to be similarly intriguing.
The Guptas and Zuma have denied any wrongdoing.
According to sources, Zuma was given a dressing down and told to stop using his "Zulu-ness" to remain in power.
South African President Jacob Zuma's days in office could be numbered. "He has so many corruptioncharges against him", Maumela said.
