Snapdragon 845 previews: incremental CPU improvements and excellent GPU performance

Samsung Galaxy S9 with Exynos 9810 Will the Exynos 9810-powered Samsung Galaxy S9 be better than its Snapdragon counterpart? Benchmark results suggest

Web browsing benchmarks showed the reference phone was 20 percent faster than the 835-powered Google Pixel 2 XL, while other data and app tests showed the 845 to be 8 percent to 14 percent faster. They still support eye-tracking with the Snapdragon 845 development kit hardware, but it hasn't been integrated yet in software so we may still be waiting on that.

Qualcomm took the stage to introduce its next-generation mobile platform, the Snapdragon 845.

As seen in the screen capture above, the benchmark was recorded just this past Monday, with the Galaxy S9 scoring 3,648 and 8,894 points in tests. They're both 10nm chipsets, but the 9810 uses four custom Samsung cores, four smaller ARM Cortex-A55 cores, and an ARM GPU, while the Snapdragon uses four ARM Cortex-A75 derivative cores, four A55 derivatives and a custom GPU.

The initial Snapdragon 845 benchmarks are encouraging. Compared to the 835, performance core speed is up from 2.35GHz, while efficiency core speed is down from 1.9GHz.

While it seems the iPhone range will continue to be the first stop for anyone wanting maximum power from their smartphone, it was always essential that the Snapdragon 845 proved itself a worthy successor. Since the new Chipset is created to power in the high-end smartphones, it has to offer the best of GPU. "Qualcomm's new Adreno 630 GPU easily impresses and widens the gap to the nearest competition".

Samsung may be on the verge of doing something it hasn't managed to pull off in years, and that is launching a flagship device with performance that can actually rival Apple's latest iPhone models.

The Geekbench benchmark results for the Exynos 9810-powered Samsung Galaxy

Qualcomm has finally started demoing units built on the Snapdragon 845 SoC to selected press.

Samsung is now the biggest smartphone manufacturer on the Android side of things so having it under partnership with Qualcomm means that the company is going to stay relevant in the market for years to come.

Samsung will most certainly have something to say during the MWC 2018 show about 5G and its benefits and hopefully, the company will have a few nice things to say about its partnership with Qualcomm, which should last for several years.

A new benchmark recently spotted on Geekbench gives us an insight into the performance of Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ powered by Samsung's very own Exynos 9810. With the exception of the Galaxy Note 8, all of the other released smartphones which the Snapdragon 845 device was compared to were running on its predecessor, the quad-core 835 chip.

The Snapdragon 845 technologies I'm most curious about, and most want to see, are Ultra HD Premium displays, active depth sensing AR cameras, and improved battery life, especially for true wireless headsets.
