Kuciak, 27, and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova were found shot dead on Sunday at his home in Velka Maca, a town to the east of Bratislava, raising concerns at home and overseas about media freedoms and the level of corruption in Slovakia.

On Sunday, police went to check on his home in Velka Maca, 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of the Slovak capital Bratislava, after his girlfriend's mother said she hadn't heard from her daughter since Thursday.

Gaspar said the killings "likely have something to do with his investigative activities".

Making the story more explosive, Sme said two Italian businessmen with possible ties to the mafia operating in Slovakia did business with a senior adviser to Prime Minister Robert Fico and through her to officials from Fico's leftist Smer-Social Democracy party.

The EU can not accept it if a journalist is murdered over his work, EP President Antonio Tajani said, calling on Slovak authorities to thoroughly investigate the case.

Jan Kuciak, 27, reported on tax evasion and fraud among Slovak businesses, including people connected to the Slovak governing party, Smer.

"We are shocked and terrified by news that Ján Kuciak and his fiancée were probably victims of a vicious execution", Ringier Axel Springer, the publisher for which Kuciak worked, told The Washington Post in a statement.

Aktuality's publisher Axel Springer condemned what it called the "cruel assassination" of its journalist, and Slovakia's leaders promised to bring those responsible for the killings to justice.

Regents to discuss Miller's fate at Thursday meeting
The only attempted corrections by the original source of the media statements are still inaccurate and completely false. The Arizona Board of Regents will meet Thursday to discuss the future of Arizona Wildcats basketball coach Sean Miller.

"We categorically reject any connection with this tragedy", they said in a statement.

Kuciak used to write for the Aktuality.sk news website and his last published article also addressed the opaque property transfers in the Five Star Residence, Bratislava, in which Kocner and businessman Ladislav Basternak are allegedly involved.

Kuciak had been receiving threats against him and his family.

"We have to find those who did it as soon as possible and ensure the safety of all journalists", President Andrej Kiska said, via Deutsche Welle.

The Slovak government offered €1 million for help in solving the murder case, which would be investigated by a special team of prosecutors, intelligence agents and members of Mr Kalinak's interior ministry staff, Mr Fico said. Investigative reporter and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered in Malta on 16 October 2017.

"What Russians and Italians have been doing... particularly connected with European funds has been under-reported, and Jan had his teeth into one of those stories".

Kocner previous year threatened to "spread dirt" about Kuciak and his family after the journalist reported he sold a flat in another luxury housing complex in the capital, Bonaparte, where his neighbor was Prime Minister Robert Fico, the Smer leader.

Kuciak is the second investigative reporter murdered in the European Union in recent months.
