The Australian said: "I know what training camps I was on with Brad, and for me that is a total lie and [is from] someone that very much, I would say, has an axe to grind with Team Sky".

Earlier this week, the findings of a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee alleged that Team Sky had "crossed an ethical line" in their use of therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs).

Wiggins insisted he had only used triamcinolone on one occasion other than the three TUEs, which had already been made public, but the DCMS reports says he may have taken it nine times in four years.

TUEs allow the use of otherwise banned substances to treat medical conditions.

"Team Sky is happy to co-operate with any investigation by the UCI and we would welcome further scrutiny of the Select Committee's report", said the Team Sky statement.

The BBC also asked Lappartient whether he thinks Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford should resign.

McQuaid said that the exploitation of grey areas was also a characteristic of British Cycling and cited the example of a crash involving Chris Hoy at the UCI Track World Championships in 2009 and his conversation with British Cycling staff afterwards. "I'd have more rights if I'd murdered someone".

"It seems that it was a little bit organised, so it's maybe not a mistake but a fault, which is different, because that could affect the credibility globally of our sport and that's why I'm concerned about this".

"It's in the report, what I can read, you can see that substances were used not for health problems or with strong pain but to increase your performances, then yes, that is something unacceptable for me and the philosophy we have, even if it seems there is no breach, no violation of the rules", he said.

Later on Tuesday, Team Sky's current lead racer Chris Froome backed Brailsford and dismissed as "absolute rubbish" claims he was among those treated with corticosteroids in the past. "I would like them to do this, to see if there is some violation of anti-doping rules", he told the BBC on Wednesday.

"The Froome case may well be the nail in the coffin for Team Sky", McQuaid said.

He returned an adverse finding for the asthma drug salbutamol at the Vuelta a Espana and is now locked in a legal and scientific wrangle with the CADF about how that happened.

The UCI said they shared the committee's concerns about the use of corticosteroids and the painkiller Tramadol in cycling.

The 32-year-old Team Sky rider is now competing at the Tirreno-Adriatico race in Italy and intends to ride May's Giro d'Italia and this summer's Tour de France.

Former Team Sky coach Shane Sutton agrees that Bradley Wiggins did not cheat, but he has called on the cyclist and the team's former doctor to "tell the truth" about the controversial use of an anti-asthma drug.

"Furthermore, we are concerned that the committee presented these unsubstantiated allegations without providing evidence to support them, which is fundamentally unfair to the team and it's riders".

"We welcome any review by the UCI which can help establish the nature of the evidence relied on by the Committee in coming to its conclusions", Team Sky said.

Froome, preparing for the Tirreno-Adriatico race in Italy, told reporters he had "never seen anything like that" over his eight years at Team Sky.

Meanwhile, Lizzie Deignan spoke of her hurt that drug-taking in professional cycling meant all riders suffer by association. "It's definitely very frustrating and very upsetting".
