African-Canadian civil rights activist Viola Desmond has been honoured with a new $10 bill featuring her image, cementing her legacy as a trailblazer and activist who refused to accept prevailing attitudes about race and gender.

A new bill on the introduction of vertical banknote $10 with a picture of Desmond, was presented on the afternoon of 8 March the Minister of Finance of Canada bill Morneau and the Governor of the Bank of Canada Stephen Poloz at the library Halifax Central Library.

Desmond becomes the first black person - and the first non-royal woman - on a regularly circulating Canadian bank note.

With a broken down auto on a business trip to Sydney, Nova Scotia on November 8, 1946, Desmond went to a movie in New Glasgow, NS. But on International Women's Day, one woman didn't just get to see a female figure on a new bill-she saw her own sister.

Desmond's case is credited with playing a role in legally ending segregation in Nova Scotia in 1954.

In 2017, there was a release of a commemorative bill celebrating the 150 anniversary of the confederation which showcased Agnes Macphail, the first woman elected to Canadian parliament.

Robson went on to thank the artists for making the new $10 bill "different" than other pieces of currency.

HRM also named a harbour ferry in honour of Desmond, unveiling back in June 2016.

"One woman's actions can really make a difference", Robson, 91, said in the video of her sneak preview, shared by the Bank of Canada.

But the new bank note could change that, helping Canadians learn about civil rights north of the border, he said.

Wanda Robson, seeing her sister's $10 bill for the first time, gasped, remarking that the artist beautifully captured every detail of her sister, saying, "It's as if she's in this room".

Desmond refused to give up her seat and was dragged out of the theatre by police, arrested, thrown in jail for 12 hours and fined.

It would take 63 years for Nova Scotia to issue Desmond, who died in 1965, a posthumous apology and pardon.
