Donald Trump says Chinese leader 'helpful' on Kim Jong Un meeting

"He commends the leadership and vision of all concerned and reiterates his support for all efforts towards peaceful denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions", United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.

Japan, the United States and South Korea must repeatedly hold multitiered talks to prevent disarray in dealing with the North.

"Make no mistake, any attack on the United States or our allies will be defeated, and any use of nuclear weapons by the North will be met with a massive military response that is effective and overwhelming", Mattis said.

Kim's meeting with South Korean officials made it onto the front page of the Rodong Sinmun, a leading state-run newspaper, but neither his policy concessions, as described by the South Korean government, nor his planned summit with Moon in April appeared to have been reported publicly in the secretive North.

The Twitter posts followed a news briefing by White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders on Friday where she said Trump would not have a meeting "without seeing concrete steps and concrete actions take place by North Korea, so the president will actually be getting something".

Sanders said the time and location of the summit have yet to be determined. "The summit request is part of North Korea's effort to say, 'We are major players and you have to deal with us'".

For at least two decades, leaders in North Korea have been seeking a personal meeting with an American president.

A second advantage: The Trump administration has few people with experience in dealing with North Korea, while the apparatchiks in the North Korean Foreign Ministry have been working on little else.

Florida club closed after video of horse on packed dance floor surfaces
The cheering crowd is suddenly horrified, gasping as the clearly distressed horse tries to escape the noisy room. The Miami Beach Police Department said it had launched a joint investigation with local government officials.

Trump had previously threatened North Korea with "fire and fury like the world has never seen". Sanders called "denuclearization" a precondition for any direct meeting between Trump and Kim.

Even a conventional war could kill tens of thousands of civilians in its first days if thousands of North Korean artillery shells fell on the 10 million citizens of Seoul, 35 miles from the demilitarized zone. He's played up the notion of having a divine blood-right to the leadership and he's crowed about how strong North Korea has become under him with all those missiles and nuclear weapons.

"We will continue to work closely with the US, South Korea and the global community to ensure that pressure on North Korea continues and sanctions are strictly enforced until Kim Jong Un matches his words with concrete actions", he said. No sitting US president has ever met with a North Korean leader.

Many years have elapsed since they were abducted by North Korea. Some expressed their reservations but ultimately supported the president's decision to accept it, according to USA officials who were briefed on the talks and requested anonymity to discuss them.

In the past, the ultimate success of a summit relied on the diplomatic spade work that the Trump administration disdains. The status quo has a cost, and too often we fail to take into account who pays the steepest price for it.

"The president has an incredible team", Sanders said, when asked which officials would accompany Trump.

Trump agreed to hold discussions with North Korea, provisionally expected sometime in May, after a South Korean delegation, which met with Kim on Monday, delivered his personal invitation for talks to the U.S. president.

Evans Revere, a former senior State Department official experienced in negotiating with North Korea, warned that there is a disconnect between how the North and the US describe "denuclearization" of the divided Korean Peninsula. "... Sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached".

Richardson said his main worry is that Trump agreed to the summit "on the seat of his trousers". The North has also, according to the USA, repeatedly cheated on past nuclear deals.
