The violence erupted after the death of a man from the mainly Buddhist Sinhalese majority last week.
Prayers were said in open grounds in many places because mosques had been burnt or vandalised.
At least 140 people, including the main instigator, have been arrested over the unrest, the police said.

A police officer not authorized to speak to the media told Anadolu Agency that scattered incidents of violence were reported in several parts of the country, especially arson attacks against Muslim-owned businesses.
Nine of the damaged mosques were in the picturesque tea-growing Kandy district, a draw for global tourists now suffering widespread cancellations.
Kandy residents said that shops and offices were open on Friday, and life was slowly returning to normal. "At the same time, the authorities are folding their arms and watching", said Muslim businessman M Jaffer, as quoted in Thursday's DailyFT newspaper.

In Kuruvita, 125 kilometres south of Kandy, police said petrol bombs were lobbed at a mosque.
