Elgar, Amla hit 50s, South Africa makes progress in 2nd test

Kagiso Rabada and Steve Smith Kagiso Rabada faces suspension for remainder of South Africa-Australia Test series

If Australia can get the three wickets they need early, they stand every chance in this Test, but if the tail hangs around with de Villiers then it'll make it very hard to win at Port Elizabeth for the Aussies.

While other batsmen had struggled to gain any momentum to the South African innings, De Villiers looked at ease and played strokes to all parts of the ground in reaching a half-century off 62 balls with ten fours. If he had have gotten out when South Africa collapsed ever so slightly then there is a chance they wouldn't even have a lead. That replicated Australia's first innings, when the tourists were 161-3 and 243 all out in a similar late slide.

However, Australia fought back gamely in the final session as they grabbed five wickets with the seamers starting to find reverse swing from the battered ball.

Warner, who suffered a fractured left thumb in 2015, had heavy strapping over much of his left palm on day two of the second Test at Port Elizabeth.

Amla was twice given out lbw and twice overturned the decision using video review, surviving on 7 and 40.

The first session will prove crucial for both teams on Monday as Marsh and Tim Paine (5) strive to preserve Australia's 1-0 series advantage.

A day later CSA issued an apology to the Warner family and Cricket Australia, and the two officials in the photo - commercial manager Clive Eksteen and media and communications manager Altaaf Khazi - are fighting to save their jobs.

South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was charged for bumping his shoulder into Steve Smith when he dismissed the Australia captain on the first day of the match.

Only one wicket, that of nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada, fell between the start of play and the afternoon tea break.

The visitors were well and truly back in the contest when, nine balls after Amla's wicket, Elgar edged Josh Hazelwood to go for 57 (197 balls).

Medium-pacer Marsh trapped South African captain Faf du Plessis and Theunis de Bruyn leg before wicket, again with full, swinging deliveries. But his participation in the remainder of the series is in doubt. That would see South Africa's best fast bowler miss the last two tests of the series.

His hearing was initially set for Saturday, but was later postponed until Sunday night with the delay put down to Chris Gaffaney, one of the on-field umpires who laid a level two charge against Rabada, falling ill.

Warner was at the center of an aggressive fielding display by the Australians in the first test in Durban, where his on-field verbal battle with South Africa's Quinton de Kock boiled over with an ugly confrontation between the players on a staircase near the dressing rooms.
