A fourth package was sent to the Manchester Gorton MP, Afzal Khan, but was not opened, according to the Guardian.

"Two people have been hospitalized as a precaution after a Labor MP received a suspicious parcel which sources say contained an unknown liquid", tweeted the Westminster police adding that "the suspect package was sent to Bedford MP Mohammad Yasin". Huq, who said she was in a select committee meeting at the time of the incident, has been MP for Ealing Central and Acton since 2015.

Scotland Yard announced that an anti-terrorism investigation was under way to identify the ones behind these letters. On Monday, two staff members from Yasin's office had also been briefly hospitalised as a precautionary measure.

"The letter calling for attacks on Muslim is just the latest example of rising Islamaphobia and deplorable hate crimes in this country", said Pakistani-origin Labour MP Yasmin Qureshi, who raised an urgent question in the House of Commons yesterday calling on the United Kingdom government to do more to tackle such "incitement to violence and help prevent the growth of such extreme views". "It is to put the frighteners on us but we won't be cowed".

Urging people to join their "day of action" next month the letter reads: "They have hurt you, they have made your loved ones suffer".

A parliamentary spokesman confirmed four packages had been sent to the building in recent days and said police were investigating the latest package. It released a statement, saying: "It is essential that all letters and envelopes are kept and handled minimally to preserve evidence for the police to investigate".

As MPs debated reports of the letters, Mr Fabricant - referring to Mr Yasin - said: "Earlier today, there was an incident in Norman Shaw North that involved him and his staff which may or may not be connected - but we think it might be - with this letter".

London Ambulance Service attended just a few minutes later - and a man and a woman were both taken to hospital as a precaution.

The spokesman said there were no reported injuries and inquiries were continuing.

The spokesman later said the suspicious substances was found not to be hazardous. "The incident, which was contained to one room, has been stood down".
