But Mattel said the company had the correct permission to produce the likeness.

One person who was not afraid to make her thoughts known was actress Salma Hayek, known for her Oscar-nominated portrayal of the Mexican artist in the 2002 film Frida.

Her family is complaining about the lack of resemblance that the doll bears to the real artist and is alleging that Mattel did not have permission to use her image.

Over the years the name and likeness of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, a fierce feminist and ardent communist, have been associated with a number of unlikely products.

"I would have liked the doll to have traits more like Frida's, not this doll with light-coloured eyes", she said.

'She celebrated her uniqueness.

Hayek is not the only one angry about the new Barbie doll though. After a long survey that suggested mothers were unhappy that their kids do not have dolls with real inspiring women whom they would aspire to be, the big toy corporation launched 17 new models.

As the latest addition to Barbie's Iconic Women series created to inspire young girls, she joins aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart and NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson as the latest BFFs in Barbie's phonebook.

But Kahlo's family soon issued a statement objecting to the doll.

Romeo's lawyer, Pablo Sangri, released a statement stressing Romeo's desire to see changes made to the doll's appearance.

Mattel, however, said in a statement that it obtained the rights legally through the Panama-based Frida Kahlo Corporation, "which owns all the rights", with a Mattel lawyer stating the company purchased the rights through Kahlo's niece, Isolda Pinedo Kahlo, more than a decade ago.

She may not have approved of being cast as a variety of Barbie, the best-selling doll whose image Mattel has updated so as to address criticism that in body type and lifestyle it had perpetuated damaging stereotypes about women.

"The company Mattel does not have the proper authorization to use the image of Frida Kahlo", it said, threatening to take "necessary measures" against the California-based toymaker.

"[The corporation] celebrates the ideological contributions of Frida Kahlo which have transcended the borders of art and which will influence new generations as a world icon through the Frida Kahlo Barbie, which conserves the essence of Barbie and the legacy of Frida Kahlo".
