Mr Trump said last week that he had accepted an offer to meet with Mr Kim - an agreement that would make him the first sitting United States president to meet face-to-face with a North Korean leader.

It's the only spot along the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where North Korean troops stand face-to-face with South Korean and United Nations Command forces.

"The offer was made and we've accepted", Sanders said.

The Trump administration on Sunday confirmed that there will be no additional conditions imposed on North Korea before a first-ever meeting of the leaders of the two nations.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed that the administration had not heard directly from North Korea, but said he expected to hear from them in the future.

The decision to meet drew support from countries seeking to defuse tensions between North Korea and the USA, along with warnings that Kim may be playing for more time to develop his weapons while seeking relief from US -led worldwide sanctions.

"I feel they're approaching this matter with caution and they need time to organise their stance".

Asked about possible meeting locations, Tillerson added that "nothing's been agreed, and I don't want to start floating ideas out through the media". He says it's "very important that those conservations are held quietly" between North Korea and the U.S.

It added: "The two leaders welcomed the prospect of dialog between the United States and North Korea, and committed to maintain pressure and sanctions until North Korea takes tangible steps toward complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearisation".

"President Trump isn't doing this for theater".

But by Monday, Pyongyang had yet to comment on Mr Trump's announcement.

While Washington is happy to use China to squeeze North Korea economically, it is not as interested in involving Beijing in the more delicate work of negotiations. They were postponed during the recent Winter Olympics in South Korea which provided an impetus for the current diplomatic push on the divided Korean Peninsula.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Tuesday that Japan wanted to see a resolution to the issue of past abductions of Japanese citizens from talks with North Korea and that North Korea must match its words with actions.

The U.S. and South Korea hold military manoeuvrs every year.

Mr Taro Kono told Mr Suh Hoon, the chief of the South's National Intelligence Service, that he was grateful for Seoul's efforts, which have brought a turnaround in the tense situation, the spokesman said in a statement.

"Talk is certainly better than war", she said.
