U.S. 'fully' expects summit with N. Korea

Hirono, Duckworth: Trump-Kim Talks a Step in Right Direction But Caution Needed President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un's Meeting Still Uncertain
Kenny Thornton | 13 March, 2018, 10:58

Abuja/Seoul: Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. expects North Korea to be in direct touch after President Donald Trump agreed to Kim Jong Un's invitation to meet, urging patience as preparations for the potentially historic handshake are worked out.

"The announcement of a meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim is a historic opportunity that holds great potential for the world", Haley said.

Last week, a South Korean delegation, led by its national security advisor, informed Trump that Kim Jon-un has invited him for a meeting.

Rhetoric in the North's state media has been tame, however, compared to previous threats past year that went as far as saying Pyongyang would fire missiles to the vicinity of the US territory of Guam if provoked.

Earlier, South Korea said North Korea's silence on summits with both the United States and South Korea was probably because of caution in preparing for the meetings, while U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington expected to hear directly from Pyongyang.

"I think it shows the effectiveness of the maximum pressure campaign, and that's one of the reasons that we're not letting up on the maximum pressure campaign, and we're going to continue pushing forward on it", Sanders said.

The South Korean officials who carried Kim's invitation to Washington are visiting China and Japan this week to update state heads on the talks. Is it the removal of American troops from South Korea?

South Korea and USA officials are reportedly in discussions over how to conduct upcoming large-scale military drills- largely meant as a display of military might- without provoking the North Korean government.

South Korea's National Security Office chief, Chung Eui-yong, who led the delegation to Pyongyang, will head to Russian Federation on Tuesday, while spy agency chief Suh Hoon met Japan's foreign minister in Tokyo, where he is to speak with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday. For example, North Korean media is silent about the Trump-Kim summit but boiling with rage at Japan, which is practicing "mendicant diplomacy" by spewing "stupid gibberish" at Asian and European ministers to convince them to maintain diplomatic and economic pressure against North Korea.
