Trump congratulated Putin on winning the Russian presidential election when they talked by phone on Tuesday.

"An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections", McCain wrote on Twitter.

He added that by congratulating Putin, Trump has "insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country's future".

McCain remains in Arizona for brain cancer treatment.

According to a Kremlin statement, the two leaders also stressed the importance of joint efforts to limit an arms race and boost economic cooperation.

The call came after White House said on March 19 that it is "not surprised by the outcome".

Jaguars releasing WR Allen Hurns, TE Marcedes Lewis
In 207 the emergence of rookie receivers Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole put Hurns' future in Jacksonville in question. The Jaguars signed Hurns as an undrafted free agent in 2014, and he caught 115 passes in his first two seasons.

The Kremlin said another point of contention, Russia's alleged role in the poisoning of a former spy with a deadly nerve agent in Britain - the first known offensive use of a nerve toxin in Europe since World War II - was not touched upon during the call.

Moscow has denied being involved.

The White House responded to McCain's criticism on Tuesday, saying it is "important to have a dialogue with Russian Federation so we can focus on areas of shared interest".

Putin won reelection in a landslide on Sunday - but both election observers and Putin's political opponents have charged that the vote was tainted by widespread fraud.

The Kremlin on Tuesday released a list of those who had sent congratulatory messages - including the leaders of Greece, Germany, Iran, the Czech Republic, Finland, Syria and North Korea.

Putin said Monday he would address disputes with the West but stressed that global relations were a two-way street.
