Since February 18, Syrian troops and allied militia have been waging a ferocious ground and air assault to flush out rebels from Ghouta, just east of the capital Damascus.

The capital, seat of President Bashar Assad's power, has come under increasing attack as government forces continue to pound rebel-held eastern Ghouta, with military backing from Russian Federation.

Qadam lies in a southern part of Damascus and has for several years hosted a range of Islamist rebels and extremists, including IS and its arch-enemy, Al-Qaeda's onetime Syrian branch Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

A monitor said Tuesday three dozen pro-government fighters were killed in a district of Syria's capital as Daesh took control of it in a surprise nighttime attack. It said dozens more were captured or wounded.

Islamic State has lost nearly all its territory in Syria after two rival offensives past year by the Syrian army, backed by Russian Federation and Iran, and an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias backed by the United States.

While the pro-government alliance seeks a full surrender, rebels want a ceasefire deal, Khodr said. More than 1,000 rebels and their families had earlier fled Qadam for rebel-held territory in the north of the country, instead of submitting to the Damascus authorities.

Fighter pilot blamed by Russian Federation for downing Malaysian Airlines plane found dead
Dutch investigators concluded that a Russian Buk missile had destroyed the Boeing 777 jet , killing 298 people. However, Russia has denied any involvement.

The area, which has been under rebel control since mid-2013, has been under a relentless bombing campaign, launched by Russian-backed Syrian forces a month ago.

Orient News and opposition activists also said the town of Douma - which is in the northern pocket controlled by the Jaysh al-Islam rebel group - had been attacked with incendiary munitions filled with white phosphorous. The school in the town of Arbin was being used as a shelter by residents.

Erdogan said the Turkish operations in Afrin would continue "for a while longer" as Turkey's military and Turkish-backed opposition fighters clear the region of booby traps and other explosives.

"They're not able to use their heavy vehicles because the planes are targeting the Civil Defense directly", al-Shami said of the rescuers. He reported 175 strikes on the town since Monday evening.

At least 29 people have been killed in a rocket attack by militants on a market in a suburb of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The UN said there are still hundreds of thousands of people left in Ghouta and many of them are children, women, and civilians with urgent need of humanitarian aid.(ANSAmed).
