Director Milos Forman, best known for his films "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus", has died at the age of 86.

The filmmaker was born on February 18, 1932 in Caslav, Czechoslovakia. However, it took him two years to become a United States citizen.

He made his name as a leading figure in Czech new wave cinema in the 1960s, but moved to the USA when Russian troops invaded in 1968.

When Soviet tanks rumbled into Prague in August 1968, Forman was in Paris for negotiations on his first American production and was sacked by his Czech studio, leading him to emigrate.

After 1989's Valmont, he made The People vs Larry Flynt, with Woody Harrelson cast as the porn publisher.

OSCAR-winning director Milos Forman handed away in his sleep after a brief sickness late final night time, his supervisor has confirmed. Adding to the news, Martine revealed that at his end, Forman was surrounded by his whole family and close friends.

He's survived by spouse Martina, their twin sons Andrew and James, and two youngsters from a earlier marriage.
