Calls For Evidence-Based Policies At March For Science

Organizers Plan Las Cruces March For Science March For Science' To Take Place Saturday In Downtown San Diego

The second March for Science was organised here on Saturday at the Elliot's Beach, with over 200 persons participating.

"There has not only been a concorted effort to undermine science but it is happening first time since Independence that absolutely no consultation is carried out with scientists on any government programmes", said D. Raghunandan of Delhi Science Forum and one of the organisers of the march.

The march started at the Barry Events Center and ended at the Marquette Commons with a rally.

"Too often nowadays, decisions are based on ideology or special interests rather than empirical evidence", said attendee Randolph Bower, an air-pollution scientist at a Research Triangle Park firm. Let me repeat: "Good science needs good democracy", she said. Education should not be limited to scientists, she said.

Speakers in Washington on Saturday spoke about making scientific education and information accessible to all people, and not just scientists.

Science As Fact is our sister site where we cover politics, debunking, fact checking, and humour. "We must invite the world to join us".

At a public meeting after the march, organisers read out messages from geneticist M.S. Swaminathan and former Anna University Vice-Chancellor M. Anandakrishnan.

And, after a year of unprecedented attacks on science, the marchers weren't afraid to get a little political.

Other marches took place across the globe, as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as Antarctica.

Scientists' criticism of the President grew weeks later when he decided the United States would pull out of the Paris climate accord.
