The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of Pakistan army, said that the personnel of Frontier Constabulary, a paramilitary force, came under attack from the Afghanistan side when they were carrying out a routine surveillance at the Pak-Afghan border in Kurram Agency, the country's northwest tribal region. The Afghan officials blamed that the Pakistani troops crossed on to their side of the border, prompting a response by border forces and the local tribal force. "Mil [military] engagement is underway to defuse situation", the ISPR said in a statement.

Khost provincial governor spokesman Talib Mangal confirmed the incident, but said two Afghan civilians and four Pakistani troops were killed. Soon after the attack, announcements were made through mosques' loudspeakers in various villages, situated along the Pak-Afghan border.

Pakistan began fencing the Pak-Afghan border previous year to prevent terrorists from crossing into the country from Afghanistan.

Initially, Afghan National Police interim chief Col. Abdul Hanan told Anadolu Agency an Afghan civilian was killed and two Pakistani troops were arrested during the clash.

Col. Hanan added that local villagers and the Afghan Border Police retaliated with gunfire.

The two countries are separated by the 2,400-kilometer (1,500-mile) Durand Line, which was drawn by British rulers in 1896.

Clashes are still underway, he said. He claimed that the Afghan forces have also captured Pakistani soldiers, but refused to reveal their number. Afghanistan, in turn, accuses Islamabad of sheltering the leadership of the Afghan Taliban militants who are battling the Western-backed government in Kabul.

The two USA allies routinely accuse each other of failing to crack down on militants who operate along the porous border.
