Russia warns US against military action over alleged chemical attack in Syria 3 things Donald Trump did wrong in his taunting Russia tweet

Turkey, on Syria's northern border, called the airstrikes "an appropriate response" to a recent chemical attack in Syria.

An ally of Assad's Syrian government Russian Federation has deployed military police in Douma after the town was sieged by Bashar al-Assad's forces on Wednesday.

Russian Federation warned the West Friday against any "dangerous" moves on Syria as its rivals hesitated over possible strikes on the country which Moscow has warned could lead to "war". A fact-finding team of inspectors from the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog was in Damascus and had been expected to head to the town of Douma on Saturday, scene of the suspected chemical weapons attack that killed more than 40 people.

As early as mid-March, Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said Syrian rebels were preparing "provocations" involving chemical weapons in Eastern Ghouta, where Douma is located. United States ambassador Nikki Haley said to the BBC that the United States has "enough proof" that Syria was behind the chemical attack.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, blasted Russia Friday for supporting Assad, telling the security council that "if Russia had lived up to its commitment, there would be no chemical weapons in Syria".

"We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences".

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to launch a missile attack on Syria over an alleged chemical weapon attack by the Syrian government, although the accusation was strongly denied by the latter.

The US-led action "makes the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Syria even worse and brings suffering to civilians", Putin's statement says. She noted in the meeting that Russian Federation "has stopped at nothing to defend the Syrian regime's multiple uses of chemical weapons".

Douma and the sprawling eastern Ghouta region near the capital, Damascus, had been under rebel control since 2012 and was a thorn in the side of Assad's government, threatening his seat of power with missiles and potential advances for years. The medics said none of the patients were hurt by chemicals. "That meeting was chaired by the vice president to discuss a number of options", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

"Russia condemns attack against Syria". Syria's civil war, which began as a popular uprising against Assad, is now in its eighth year.

In a US military action a year ago in response to a sarin gas attack, the Pentagon said missiles took out almost 20 per cent of the Syrian air force.

"Smart missiles should fly toward terrorists, not the legitimate government that has been fighting global terrorism for several years on its territory", she said.

The allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were eager yesterday to lay blame for the crisis not with him but with Mr Trump.

The Russian military has claimed an alleged chemical attack in Syria was staged and directed by Britain.

Syria and its backers, Russian Federation and Iran, say reports of the attack were fabricated by rebels, and rescue workers in Douma have accused the United States of seeking to use it as a pretext to attack the government.

The U.S., France and Britain have been in extensive consultations about launching a military strike as early as the end of this week, U.S. officials have said.

The remarks by Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, followed claims by French President Emmanuel Macron of "proof" that Syria used chemical weapons in the attack and a declaration that France will respond at a "time of our choosing".

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Theresa May held a special cabinet meeting to consider whether Britain should join the USA and France in possible military action.

"Due to its inability - or refusal to curb Assad's crimes, Russian Federation must assume responsibility for his behavior", they said. But Moscow remains alone because leaders of Western countries have taken the side of the U.S., announcing that they will join it if it made a decision to attack the Assad forces directly.
