Alfie Evans: Parents apologise as police probe 'abuse and intimidation'

Doctors have said they can provide no further treatment for the little boy, but his parents, Tom Evans and Kate James, have fought against the decision.

A lawyer representing the parents on Monday returned to the Court of Appeal to ask judges to rule that Alfie should be allowed to travel to a foreign hospital.

The letter also said that "due to the seriousness of the events" last night, only Mr Evans and Alfie's mother Kate James, along with two other named family members', were allowed to visit the toddler.

The father of seriously ill toddler Alfie Evans has said "we are never going to back down" after he and the child's mother were told they can not take their son to a foreign hospital.

It is thought that Supreme Court justices may now be asked to consider the case.

Alfie's case was back in court today after his parents unsuccessfully attempted last week to remove their baby from Alder Hey children's hospital and transfer him to a healthcare facility in Italy.

The woman claimed she had been verbally abused by supporters of Alfie Evans' family at Alder Hey in Liverpool and called a protest held there "a circus".

Specialists at Alder Hey said life-support treatment should stop and Mr Justice Hayden said he accepted medical evidence which showed that further treatment was futile.

The first to quit was Roselyn Akombe who shocked many when she resigned just days to the repeat presidential poll and the suspension.

The hearing was conducted in the Court of Justice in Westminster before Lord Justice Davis, Lady Justice King and Lord Justice Moylan. The child's parents also suggested that Alfie was being unlawfully detained at Alder Hey, but the judge dismissed that suggestion.

"We're never going to give up on you, Alfie".

Those hearings led to Mr Justice Hayden setting a time and date for life support to be switched off at a High Court Hearing earlier this week. The court stayed the removal of Alfie's life support, pending the decision of the Supreme Court.

Alfie's parents say "the state" is wrongly interfering with their parental choice.

Speaking outside the hospital, Alfie's dad declared "it's not over" while crowds of supporters chanted "get him out".

During the December 2017 inspection, safety watchdog Care Quality Commission found "very worrying problems" in its operating theatres, "near misses" that went unreported, and there were complaints from theatre staff that hospital managers did not listen to their "repeated concerns". Moylan argued, however, that both Bambino Gesu staff and staff at Alder Hey agree that no hope remains for curative or preventative treatment for Alfie and that he should receive end of life care.

Alder Hey said in a statement: "We would ask that noise levels outside the hospital are kept to a minimum and for example vehicle horns are not sounded".
