The group said it recognizes "direct responsibility it has acquired" in the "excessive suffering" their actions have caused.

- The Basque separatist group ETA apologised on April 20, 2018 for the "pain" and "harm" it caused during its decades-long campaign of violence, and appealed to its victims for forgiveness. "ETA's errors and bad decisions have also created victims that did not participate directly in the conflict, both in the Basque country and outside of it", the group said.

In a statement published by Basque newspapers Berria and Gara, ETA said: "We want to show our respect to the dead, the injured and the victims that ETA's actions have caused", the statement said. It is also to vow never to return to violence.

"We are conscious that in this long period of struggle, we have created a lot of pain, including damages for which there is no solution. We are very sorry".

The group, which is due to conclude its definitive dissolution within the next few weeks, said the future would have to bring further reconciliation within the Basque country.

Spain's government said Eta was defeated politically and operationally and did not achieve any of its goals.

The statement came just days before ETA is expected to announce its dissolution.

ETB said that an event to mark the end of ETA - a Basque-language acronym for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, meaning Basque Homeland and Freedom - will be held in southern France before the final announcement by the group. It also targeted state security forces and in 1973 assassinated the Spanish prime minister Luis Carrero Blanco with a bomb so powerful his vehicle was blown 20 metres into the air.

At least 829 people were killed before the group announced a permanent ceasefire in 2011.
