A regular blood donation can save three lives, and a plasma donation can save 18 lives.

James Harrison, 81, retired from donating blood Friday, ending a 60-year chapter as a blood donor in Australia where many called him "the Man with the Golden Arm", KPTV reported.

When he was 14, Harrison underwent a major chest surgery, receiving blood transfusions that saved his life, according to a statement published by Australian Red Cross Blood Service website.

Harrison has a unique blood type, which contains potent antibody which was used to create the Anti-d injection that helps to fight Rhesus D haemolytic Disease (HDN) in unborn babies.

"I hope it's a record that somebody breaks, because it will mean they are dedicated to the cause", Mr Harrison said of his last donation.

It's not just the high number of donations that makes Harrison's story so noteworthy. Harrison was dubbed "the man with the golden arm" for having unique properties associated with his blood plasma.

"And more than 17 percent of women in Australia are at risk, so James has helped save a lot of lives".

Iran and the art of the deal
Iran's government must decide whether to follow the United States and withdraw or try to salvage what's left with the Europeans. Companies and banks doing business with Iran will have to scramble to extricate themselves or run afoul of the US government.

" We motivate the companions and also close friends of all brand-new moms to think of contributing blood, simply one contribution assists make sure a person has the opportunity to be a mom".

Soon after donating, he was found to have Rhesus-negative (Rh-) blood and Rhesus-positive (Rh+) antibodies. Thus resulting in serious illness, brain damage, or death.

If a mother is Rh-negative and her unborn baby is Rh-positive, they have Rh incompatibility- and that can be a problem. As her body starts feeling the baby's blood cells as a "foreign threat", she may then start producing antigens that can be prove to be unsafe for the baby.

The mother must have also been previously sensitised to RhD-positive blood.

If sensitisation occurs, the next time the woman is exposed to RhD positive blood her body will produce antibodies immediately. Australia was one of the first countries to discover a blood donor with this antibody, so it was quite revolutionary at the time'.

If she is pregnant with an RhD-positive baby, the antibodies can cross the placenta, causing rhesus disease in the unborn baby. This prevents the mother from developing an immunity from the baby's blood.

This disease is now treatable with a medicine called anti-D immunoglobulin.
