Organizers of the event took the theme a little too seriously as they brought a wild tiger in a cage to the premises.

"The event included jungle themed decorations and several animals were displayed in a very controlled situation, including a lemur, two macaws, an African fennec fox and a tiger", the statement read. Among them was a tiger in a cage.

"Oh my God", said woman at a table near the front.

Some however were not amused, saying the animals were more like "center pieces" for the students to gawk at.

As the drumming quickened, two performers walked out into the space between the cage and the crowd. Things like live tigers.

"It's super scared", someone in the crowd observed as the dancers juggled flames before the tiger. A Miami high school is under fire after using a caged tiger as an attraction at its prom.

The freakish choice of entertainment left a sister of one of the students who attends the all-boys Roman Catholic High School aghast. According to the school, the tiger was only "displayed for a few minutes". It stared at the fake rock backdrop and the wall-mounted TVs that looped video of real grasslands.

Soon after, Marie-Christine Castellanos - whose brother was at the prom - took to social media to post a video of the wild animal, as well as to express her outrage at the staff who arranged the party, dubbing them "shameful".

The school also released a statement to ABC station Local 10 defending the wild animal entertainment.

"They considered it exotic and fun", Castellanos said, "for such a religious school to demonize a poor creature".

In a statement shared online CCHS Principal David Pugh acknowledged students' concerns and apologized for the incident.

After seeing video of the animals on display, Ron Magill, curator for ZooMiami told the Miami Herald Sunday that he thinks the tiger was "obviously distressed". "He is stressed. The tiger is pacing up and down".

"Upon reflection, we regret the decision to have live animals at our prom". We will immediately evaluate our current policies and procedures regarding all school activities and events. "We all have learned a great deal from this experience".
