Hundreds of Palestinians were treated for tear gas inhalation.

Israel's military said "over 35,000 Palestinians are now taking part in violent riots in 12 locations along the Gaza Strip security fence".

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a message to Gazans "we will protect our civilians with all our means and not enable the fence to be crossed".

"The rioters are hurling firebombs and explosive devices towards the security fence and [Israeli] forces, and are burning tyres, throwing rocks and launching flaming objects in order to ignite fires in Israeli territory and harm [Israeli] troops".

"Hence it's not really a conflict, not for us, not for future agreements and I think we can see also the reaction amongst the Arab world, the rest of the world", she told RTÉ's Morning Ireland on Monday.

The rallies will culminate on Tuesday, May 15, the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment - an event Palestinians refer to as the "Nakba" or "the Catastrophe".

Last week, the Israeli government said the ongoing border protests constituted a "state of war" in which worldwide humanitarian law did not apply. Israel, on the other hand, lays claim over the whole city as its "capital".

Some protesters moved to within about 150 meters of the border fence.

"Had any other country done this It is hard to imagine Washington remaining quiet", Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, a Washington, D.C. -based coalition of organizations that oppose Israel's policies toward Palestinians, told Newsweek.

Israel regards all of the city, including the eastern sector it captured and annexed in the 1967 Middle East war, as its "eternal and indivisible capital" in a move that has not won global recognition.

"Instead, as this is happening, the United States government is well represented in Jerusalem where it is opening its Embassy to Israel as the Israeli military sheds Palestinian blood in Gaza". In a Fox News interview, Mnuchin repeatedly referenced Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and said Mr. Trump should be praised for "taking action" to keep Americans and people in the Middle East safe.

"We believe that it is possible for both sides to gain more than they give so that all people can live in peace, safe from danger, free from fear and able to pursue their dreams", Kushner said.

Kushner did address the violence at the border, saying the protestors were "part of the problem". A total of 83 people are reported to have been killed since the start of the protests. Groups of protesters also marched from the West Bank into Jerusalem in the hours preceding the ceremony. The plain reality that Israel's capital is Jerusalem.

The Trump administration has almost completed a long-awaited Israeli-Palestinian peace plan but is undecided on how and when to roll it out, given Palestinians' outrage over the embassy move and their contention that Washington can no longer be an honest broker.

"Within the confines of Jerusalem, every man, woman and child becomes part of something more than themselves", Friedman said.
