WHO Seeks to Wipe Out Trans Fats Worldwide

World Health Organization Launches Effort to Eliminate Artificial Trans Fat Globally WHO Calling for Trans Fats Elimination in all Foods in Five Years

Cardiovascular diseases are Argentina's main cause of death, and trans fat elimination is seen as having the biggest potential impact on the general population.

The World Health Organisation has called for the elimination of industrially produced trans-fatty acids from the global food supply.

In 2008, the PAHO-backed Trans Fat Free Americas Declaration called for limiting industrially-produced trans fat to less than 2% of total fat in oils and margarines, and less than 5% of total fat in other foods. A 2015 study published in the WHO Bulletin estimated that anywhere from 301 to 1517 cardiac deaths per year were averted by eliminating industrially-produced trans fats in Argentina (1). Natural trans fats are only produced in small quantities in the gut of some animals, while artificial trans fats are much more common and are created through an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid.

In India, for example, researchers have found high concentrations of trans fats in street food and in packaged snacks, many of which have no warning labels.

In a release issued Monday, the United Nations health agency said eliminating trans fats is critical to preventing deaths worldwide. "But healthier alternatives can be used that would not affect taste or cost of food", according to the news release announcing the initiative.

This includes the review of dietary sources of industrially-produced trans fats and the landscape for required policy change.

Asked if World Health Organization was readying for a wider fights against other drivers of noncommunicable diseases, including products like processed sugar, Tedros said the answer was "a big yes". Numerous fats are in foods or oils made by local producers. The WHO estimates that more than 500,000 people per year die from cardiovascular disease caused by trans fat intake through processed foods and some baked goods. The declaration recommended mandatory labeling of trans fat content in foods, standardized across the Americas, and when possible, replacement with unsaturated fats. In Mexico, a country that has a very high intake of trans fats, initiatives are being established to lower that.

Fear not, the move towards eliminating trans fats doesn't mean you'll have to kiss your precious Oreos goodbye.

"The removal of trans fats from the food supply as an additive counts as one of the major public health victories of the last decade", said Laura MacCleery, policy director for the Washington, D.C. -based advocacy group, Center for Science in the Public Interest.

"The world is now setting its sights on today's leading killers - particularly heart disease, which kills more people than any other cause in nearly every country", said Frieden, president of Resolve to Save Lives, a New-York-based project of an organization called Vital Strategies.

Consumers didn't miss trans fats when they were replaced in Denmark, the first country to eliminate them, said Steen Stender, professor of nutrition, exercise and sports at the University of Copenhagen.

Enforce compliance of policies and regulations.

Dr. Tom Frieden, a former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who worked with World Health Organization officials on the call to action, called its move unprecedented.
