Crowds of well-wishers lined the streets in Liverpool to pay their final respects at the funeral of Alfie Evans.

Alfie, who was born in May 2016, was first admitted to Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital in December of that year after suffering seizures, and had been a patient ever since.

Alfie had a degenerative neurological condition that left him with nearly no brain function.

Members of the public and "Alfie's Army" broke into applause as the funeral cortege passed the Goodison Park ground en route to a private burial of the youngster in Liverpool.

Doctors believed Alfie had a degenerative neurological condition, which has led to parallels being drawn with the case of Charlie Gard.

Alfie's coffin sported images of toy soldiers and the Everton motif.

A private funeral for toddler Alfie Evans will be held later.

Alfie Evans: parents' legal battle to keep son on life support

Tributes were left outside the stadium at the bottom of a statue of famous Evertonian Dixie Dean.

The terminally ill toddler, who was in a semi-vegetative state from a degenerative condition that medics were not able to definitively identify, died in hospital on April 28.

The little boy died at Alder Hey Hospital after a long legal battle between his parents and medical staff over plans to withdraw his life support.

One woman told the Liverpool Echo she had come because "I want Kate and Tom to know I care", while another said she was "so proud" of Alfie's parents.

A vigil was held last Wednesday on what would have been the toddler's second birthday.

Alfie's parents lost a series of legal challenges against that ruling, including at the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights. Alfie's parents had also wanted to fly their son to Italy for further treatment.
