DR Congo receives first doses of Ebola vaccine amid outbreak

A new experimental vaccine has been shown to be highly effective, though quantities are now limited.

A total of 250,000 USA dollars has been set aside for outbreak response activities by the Africa CDC, and member countries have been pledging support by contributing health workers. It also urged the Minister of Interior, Lt. -Gen.

"While we plead with the health workers to be open to ways to solve the problem, we charge Nigerians to support one another and adhere to all health etiquettes to forestall an outbreak of epidemic and health crisis".

This is the 9th Ebola outbreak that the DRC is witnessing in four decades, after the first outbreak in 1976.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly also called for screening of passengers at the ports, adding that health institutions should be put on red alert because of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In our experience, for each confirmed case of Ebola there are about 100-150 contacts and contacts of contacts eligible for vaccination.

Part of the resolutions was to urge two ministers to be pro-active in preventing an outbreak of the disease already ravaging the East African country of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
