Senate likely to vote Wednesday to restore net neutrality

Senate Democrats push to block net neutrality repeal using Congressional Review Act Net neutrality advocates gain symbolic win as Senate votes to save Obama rules

Last week, the FCC said the net neutrality rules would expire on June 11 and that the new regulations approved in December, handing providers broad new power over how consumers can access the internet, would take effect.

Senate supporters of the FCC rules have put forward the legislation under the Congressional Review Act, a law that permits Congress to revisit - and reject - decisions by administrative agencies within a certain window of their approval.

Announcing that Democrats would force a vote on the repeal of net neutrality, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY said in a statement, "Soon the American people will know which side their member of Congress is on: fighting for big corporations and ISPs or defending small business owners, entrepreneurs, middle-class families, and everyday consumers".

Sen. Ed Markey, who is now leading of the effort to save Net Neutrality, stated that the possibility of President Trump blocking the movement if it passes the necessary votes would create a "political firestorm", however the controversial world leader hasn't shied from such backlash in the past. Fifty senators have declared their support for it - one shy of the majority needed to pass it.

The resolution will seek to overturn a rule voted on by the FCC in December that eliminated most of its net-neutrality regulations. Senate Democrats are forcing the vote less than a month before the new rules are scheduled to take effect. The Open Internet Order prohibited internet service providers from blocking, slowing down, or discriminating against content online.

He continued, "The repeal of net neutrality is not only a blow to the average consumer, but it is a blow to public schools, rural Americans, communities of color and small businesses".

He said the organisation would "reach out on a few occasions, sort of passing along news" and suggesting that he tweet it. Mr Trump Jr said he thinks the only time he responded was to say: "Hey, when (am I) going to receive the next leak"?

For almost all of the past 10 years, the FCC has had in place rules that sought to guarantee net-neutrality protections.

"The next 24 hours could make or break this fight. This is a moment where the entire Internet needs to go all-in for net neutrality", wrote Greer.

That the agency overturned its rules was no surprise. And Trump is unlikely to sign a resolution that would effectively rebuke his chosen FCC chairman.

"Under my proposal, the federal government will stop micromanaging the Internet", he said in November, a month before he and the FCC's two other Republicans, Michael O'Rielly and Brendan Carr, voted to repeal the rules.

For almost all of the past 10 years, the FCC has had in place rules that sought to guarantee net-neutrality protections.

This wouldn't be the end of the effort's struggles, however, as it is unknown whether the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives will even vote on the issue or President Trump would impart his required signature on the matter. One more would pass the bill, though it would still have to get through the House and the President's desk, making its prognosis poor. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is the only Republican who has pledged to support net neutrality.
