Twitter's new policy on trolls is 'out of sight, out of mind'

Twitter announced Tuesday that it will implement new changes aimed at downplaying the visibility of "trolls" on its platform.

If this sounds familiar, it's very similar to a tactic called "shadowbanning", a practice that Twitter has already been accused of using in the past.

It says if an account has not confirmed their email address, if the same person signs up for multiple accounts simultaneously, accounts that repeatedly tweet and mention accounts that do not follow them this could be seen as examples of trolling.

The company will hide certain replies from conversations and search results in a bid to "improve the health of the conversation" on Twitter.

"Some troll-like behavior is fun, good and humorous". Twitter says accounts that behave inappropriately will be made "less visible" on the platform, especially on search and in public conversations, where the company sees the most abuse.

"We're also looking at how accounts are connected to those that violate our rules, and how they interact with each other", they explain.

"The result is that people contributing to the healthy conversation will be more visible in conversations and search".

Those tweets will still be available, but users will have to manually click "show more replies" in order to reveal them.

Additionally, following Facebook's lead, Twitter recently began encouraging a public conversation about its impact on the health of individuals and society at large.

The signals will now be considered in how Twitter organizes and presents content in communal areas, like conversation and search, according to the duo.

"That means fewer people are seeing Tweets that disrupt their experience on Twitter", the post said.

The company said tests of the new system had resulted in fewer abuse reports being filed, suggesting people were having a "better experience".

It said it had deleted or added warnings to about 29 million posts that had broken its rules on hate speech, graphic violence, terrorism and sex, during the first three months of the year.

Twitter executives Harvey and Gascam said that the initiative is part of an ongoing attempt "to improve the health of the public conversation on Twitter".

"This technology and our team will learn over time and will make mistakes", the post said. "We are making progress as we go", Dorsey said.
