The Bangladesh High Court granted bail to Opposition leader and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Thursday, BDNews24 reported. Later, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the government moved the appeals before the apex court challenging the high court's bail order.

Lawyers from both sides said the ruling does not necessarily mean Zia will be released from jail because she's been arrested in connection with three other cases.

As per reports, this bail will not entitle Zia to walk out of prison as her bail pleas in six other cases were yet to be delivered.

After hearing arguments on Tuesday, the Appellate Division set Wednesday to deliver its order on the two petitions filed challenging Khaleda's bail granted by the High Court.

They had also said that Zia challenged her conviction in the High Court and "let her get acquitted there", but now she did not deserve the bail for her sickness as the medical board, which had examined her, had not recommended that she be hospitalised, which could have been the ground for her bail.

On March 19, the Appellate Division stayed Khaleda's bail until May 8 in the graft case in which she was convicted by the lower court.

However, Mohammad Ali apologised to the court and said: "The court can react, but the court does not allow us (lawyers) to react".

The court also sentenced Khaleda's elder son Tarique Rahman, now in the United Kingdom, and four others to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment each, and fined them a total of Tk 2.10 crore, saying that all the convicts have to pay the fine in equal amounts. The judges reportedly considered her health condition and her short jail term before granting her the bail.

In the petitions, Khaleda's lawyer Sanaullah Mia mentioned that his client had earlier filed writ petitions with the HC seeking quashing of the case proceedings.

In another development, the hearings of 11 cases, including a sedition suit, filed against Khaleda were adjourned by a Dhaka court yesterday until July 1.
