Fraud case linked to Eli Manning and Giants to begin Monday

A spokesman for the defendants on Monday said a settlement had been reached to resolve the claims after three sports memorabilia collectors accused the Giants quarterback of providing fake "game-worn" equipment.
Now the trial, which was expected to take approximately four weeks, will be averted altogether, keeping Manning from possibly having to take the stand to testify about his alleged role in a scheme to falsely depict helmets and other pieces of Giants equipment as game-worn.
Brian Brook, an attorney for plaintiff and memorabilia dealer Eric Inselberg, told reporters after Monday's hearing he was disappointed in the delay of taking the case to trial. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday morning.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs, the Giants and Manning didn't return messages seeking comment Sunday night. According to the report, the email shows Manning asking Skiba to get "2 helmets that can pass as game used".
However, because this was a civil case and not a federal case, and because there will be no jury verdict, it's unlikely the league will invest its time and resources. A trial was set to begin next week in New Jersey.
Manning's attorneys claimed the emails had been marked confidential and should never have been released, and that Manning was merely honoring a contract with Steiner Sports to provide two each of game-used helmets and jerseys.
Skiba's reply says, "BS ones, you are correct". Manning and the team had denied the allegations. "I've done nothing wrong and I'm still being attacked".
Manning's two Super Bowls likely will outweigh the damage that would come from a loss in this case, but it's still a potential bad look for the former Rebels standout. After those emails were made public, Manning angrily denied any wrongdoing, and his attorney said in a court filing this month that his client meant in that exchange to ask Skiba for helmets that would "satisfy the requirement of being game-used".
