Subtropical Storm Alberto forms over the northwestern Caribbean Sea

Tropical depression formation expected Saturday Hurricane center increases chances of tropical development to 90 percent

As of Friday morning, the National Hurricane Center says there is a 90% chance we have our first tropical depression or Tropical Storm Alberto in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by Saturday. Subtropical Storm Alberto has formed near the Gulf of Mexico, and will track closer to the Gulf coast through the holiday weekend, sending widespread rain to the southeast.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ON THE COAST: At the beach, this will be a bigger deal than it seems for Memorial Day Weekend: heavy rain, flash flooding, high risk of rip currents, gusty winds, and some risk of severe weather on the eastern side of the storm system.

Forecasters believe Alberto will become a full-fledged tropical storm once it gets into the Gulf and, as it grows, will carry wind speeds close to 74 miles per hour, which would make it a category 1 hurricane.

The system could be a tropical storm or even a category 1 hurricane by the time it gets to the Gulf Coast, he said. Alberto would mark the first named storm of the 2018 Atlantic season. "That was an exceptionally slow year for tropical systems, as there were only six".

At the meeting, Gov. Scott urged Floridians to watch the weather closely and make a plan.

Heavy rains, possible coastal storm surge of 2-4 feet expected in our area.

WIND: Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area in Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula through Saturday.

A hotel owner in Panama City Beach, Florida, tells the Panama City News Herald that her familys five hotels are normally full on Memorial Day weekend. These systems should result in a faster motion of Alberto toward the central Gulf Coast over the weekend. For many parts of the region it's already the second wettest month of May on record.

Prior to 2002 subtropical storms were not given names, but the Tropical Prediction Center issued forecasts and warnings on them similar to those for tropical cyclones. The threat continues to be for periods of heavy rain.

Northwest Florida emergency management officials say some areas could see up to a foot of rain from late Saturday into Tuesday, and widespread flooding is to be expected.

Memorial Day is the traditional beginning of beach season, but the weather service issued warnings about risky currents along the Gulf Coast during the holiday period.
