The report added that United and Fred's agent, Gilberto Silva, are keen to get a deal completed before the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on June 14, and his €60 million (£52.5 million) release clause is not thought to be "a stumbling block".

And that's partly due to how well the World Cup victor believes Portugal captain Ronaldo would link up with the 26-year-old Brazil global.

The Guardian and Sky Sports have suggested that the club are close to agreeing a deal in the region of €50m for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

With the two wide forwards dropping back into the wing back areas and the three midfielders sitting in front of what is now effectively a back six, Manchester United look to absorb pressure, win the ball and then break at speed to catch their opponents out.

The 25-year-old's impressive form has also caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League as Manchester City were strongly linked in January while United have expressed their interest in recent months.

Reports this morning say Fred has held talks with United and a move could be concluded as early as next week.

Shakhtar have proven to be an excellent springboard for Brazilian players making the first jump into European football, with Fernandinho, Willian and Douglas Costa, among the players to move onto bigger and better things after establishing themselves in Ukraine.

Following Michael Carrick's retirement at the end of the 2017/18 season and Marouane Fellaini's contract soon to run out, Mourinho needs reinforcements in central midfield and Fred fits the bill as a two-way midfielder not scared to dig in and do his work defensively.

It would be a big surprise if United actually signed another attacking player, considering Mourinho said in February that he wouldn't be signing any more forwards in the summer.

It remains to be seen whether joining Jose Mourinho's side is a good idea, but one Portuguese coach most definitely made a positive influence on Fred.

While it is interesting that Mourinho is signing a similar-ish player to the Frenchman, there is no reason why they can not complement each other in a midfield three. Lucescu did not use Fred too frequently but, after the player was suspended having tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide during the 2015 Copa America, he developed into a leader until Paulo Fonseca.
