An official from the National Weather Service warns that even after Subtropical Storm Alberto passes, there's still a risk for rip currents.

Forecasters say 2 inches (5 centimeters) of rain is expected on saturated ground with isolated areas getting up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain.

Landfall is most likely in the Florida Panhandle, maybe before sunrise near Apalachicola, or as late as the evening it were to take a more westward track to Pensacola.

Alberto is the first major storm of the 2018 hurricane season, which runs through the fall and often brings heavy storm damage to the Gulf Coast and southeastern United States. As it travels up the warm waters of the Gulf, it could well become a full tropical storm.

A subtropical storm like Alberto has a less defined and cooler center than a tropical storm, and its strongest winds are found farther from its center.

The slow-moving system is expected to cause wet misery across the eastern U.S. Gulf Coast over the holiday weekend.

The governors of Florida, Alabama and MS all declared states of emergency ahead of the storm.

The latest information from the Bay County Emergency Operations Center suggests Tropical Storm Alberto is now expected to make landfall somewhere between the Big Bend area and Destin around 7 a.m. Monday, May 28.

"Whether you're a resident of this state or just visiting, you need to stay updated on this evolving tropical system", Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant said in a statement.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for parts of MS and Alabama, meaning the conditions for a full storm are possible in the next 48 hours.

Officials in Bay County say current wind predictions estimate tropical storm-strength gusts (39 miles per hour and greater) to begin around 8 p.m. this evening. There were no immediate reports of emergencies.

"Heavy rains and gusty winds continue to spread northward over Florida", it tweeted. This greatest threat with Alberto is the rainfall.
