Three million people die prematurely each year due to tobacco use that causes cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and stroke, the world's leading killers, it said, marking World No Tobacco Day.

Seven out of 10 smokers in India are aware of the consequences, but 53% among them failed in their efforts to kick the cigarette butt, new data released by the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (FSFW) showed.

Since 2016, the Tobacco Consequences Prevention Fund under the Ministry of Health has assisted the operation of free hotlines supporting cigarette addicts at Bach Mai hospital in Hanoi and Gia Dinh People's Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, while helping eight other health facilities run consultations for people who want to quit smoking.

Tobacco use is a major cause of non-communicable disease, not only in Myanmar but also worldwide.

Jeff Stephens with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network says bringing parity between cigarettes and chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes and cigars will help keep young people from ultimately smoking.

"WHO has estimated that tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) is now responsible for the death of about six million people across the world each year with numerous deaths occurring prematurely". According to doctors, passive smokers have a 25-30% added risk of developing heart diseases. Tobacco use is the second leading cause of CVD, after high blood pressure.

World No Tobacco Day 2018 will focus on the impact tobacco has on the cardiovascular health of people worldwide.

"It is shocking that with just a puff of cigarette, a smoker breathes more than 4,000 chemicals including arsenic which is used in rat poison and formaldehyde used to embark dead bodies". Let us choose health, not tobacco, Moeti advised.

"Today, I call upon member states to implement measures that we know would strengthen tobacco control as found in WHO's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control". In 2017, there were 12.2 million smokers.

More than 104 million people in India continue to put their health at risk by using combusted tobacco every day. "We've seen a decline in cigar smoking, and lately, we have started to see a decline in smokeless tobacco".

Questioned about how to reconcile a robust tobacco initiative with the introduction of legal recreational cannabis by late summer, Petitpas Taylor said marijuana rules are necessary given Canada has the highest number of cannabis users among youth in developed countries. This inquiry followed a 2015 review published by Public Health England suggesting that vaping was around 95% less harmful than smoking tobacco. Women and children are most vulnerable and at risk from the health effects of second-hand smoke.
