More must be done to strengthen to the architecture of the eurozone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, giving a new push for reforms to the currency union ahead of an EU summit this month.

Merkel said that the bailout fund, know as the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), was not sufficient to shield the euro zone from crisis. Merkel did not say if her concerns had been addressed.

The chancellor spoke at a time of new concern about cohesion in the 28-member European Union, after a populist coalition with a strong euroskeptic streak was installed in Italy this week.
