Barcelona have agreed a five-year contract extension with France global centre-half Samuel Umtiti, the club have announced.

But in the face of transfer speculation the France global has opted to commit himself to the Blaugrana until 2023.

Umtiti joined Barca for €25m from Lyon in 2016 and he quickly established himself alongside Pique in the middle of the back four.

The France global, who scored the opening goal in his country's 3-1 victory over Italy on Friday, joined Barcelona from Lyon in 2016.

Neymar's wonder goal on return from injury helps Brazil sink Croatia
The Selecao face Austria next Sunday in their only other friendly before their opening game against Switzerland on Sunday 17 June. Neymar will have dips in his form before being able to consistently produce his best football, according to Brazil coach Tite.

His talents have not gone unnoticed, with United boss Jose Mourinho an apparent admirer as he looks to rebuild the Red Devils defence this summer.

The 24-year-old defender, who had been linked with a move to Manchester United, has helped Barca win LaLiga, two Copa del Reys and the Spanish Supercopa during his two seasons in Catalonia. The player has been granted permission by France coach Didier Deschamps to return to Spain on Monday morning to sign his new contract which will tie him to Barcelona until 30 June 2023.

Last season, Barcelona won La Liga conceding just 29 goals in 38 games, with Umtiti playing 25 times after fighting with injury problems.

The centre-back is now training with the France squad as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup. The club are working on the basis that on Wednesday and Thursday the French defender's lawyers will be in Barcelona to ratify the new deal.
