Promising new research enables scientists to use a blood test to screen for different types of cancers at early stages.

Dr. Klein added, "Most cancers are detected at a late stage, but this "liquid biopsy" gives us the opportunity to find them months or years before someone would develop symptoms and be diagnosed".

Lead author Geoffrey Oxnard, associate professor of medicine at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston, said: "We're excited that initial results from the CCGA study show it is possible to detect early-stage lung cancer from blood samples using genome sequencing".

'We hope this test could save many lives.

In a race for detecting, treating or curing cancer, researchers keep on discovering new ways to fight the disease that kills many people around the globe.

The breakthrough is expected to be officially announced at the annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago this week.

Among four cancer-free people who tested positive, the USA authors say two women were diagnosed with ovarian and endometrial cancer just months later. The test had particularly good results for ovarian and pancreatic cancers.

Nonetheless, liquid biopsies could "dramatically reshape the way that care for cancer and other inherited diseases is delivered", says The Independent.

Matsuyama holes out and shares the Memorial lead
What makes it more hard , Nicklaus said, is the plethora of young, accomplished players that Woods must now compete against. The wheels came off further when a par putt at the following hole failed to land, leaving him at four over through seven.

Simon Stevens, head of NHS England, said that such advances put the health service on the "cusp of a new era". Klein's team examined 1,600 patients, 878 of the patients were recently diagnosed with cancer.

And four out of five liver and gall-bladder cancers were successfully diagnosed.

Grail's lung cancer data comes from a wider study that eventually aims to enroll 15,000 participants and cover 20 different types of cancers.

The blood test found lymphoma and myeloma with slightly less accuracy, at 77% and 73%, and bowel cancer in two out of three patients.

Researchers also found that more than half of patients in the study had mutations in their blood that came from white blood cells, and not tumors, requiring them to develop a method to screen those out to prevent false positives.

The research has only taken a first step in detecting cancer through blood tests, and it shows promise in the future of cancer screening.

Brain tumours are very complex and have unique properties, hence further work will be required to determine whether this current test may be useful. It detected 51 percent of early-stage cancers and 89 percent of late-stage cancers.
