ACT immunotherapy cures terminal breast cancer patient

A new study finds some early stage breast cancer survivors will benefit just as well from endocrine therapy without the need for chemotherapy to prevent recurrence ACT immunotherapy cures terminal breast cancer patient

The findings, from the largest breast cancer treatment trial ever conducted, showed that most patients who have an intermediate risk of a cancer recurrence - a group that numbers 65,000 women a year in the United States - can avoid chemotherapy and its often debilitating side effects.

Perkins remembers her oncologist giving her three years to live when her breast cancer returned in an advanced form in 2013. Perkins was 49 years old when they found that the tumor in her right breast had spread to the rest of her body.

National Institutes Of Health: "New approach to immunotherapy leads to complete response in breast cancer patient unresponsive to other treatments" - "A novel approach to immunotherapy developed by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has led to the complete regression of breast cancer in a patient who was unresponsive to all other treatments". They also basically had the same survival rate without recurrence after nine years (83.3 percent for hormone therapy and 84.3 percent for combined therapies), according to the National Cancer Institute report. Today, she said, she has a "few spots" in her left lung that Rosenberg believes may be scar tissue.

"She may have lost her life", her husband, Scott Satterfield, said recently, "but I hope someone else will gain from her trial".

"This is just one treatment that's necessary because the cells are alive".

In a lab, Rosenberg's team grew those few immune cells into billions, then injected them into Perkins' bloodstream.

If doctors had recommended she skip chemo based on the gene test, "I would have accepted that", she said. They found 197 mutations, all in all, 196 of which are unique to Perkins herself.

Those of us who have seen cancer attack the people we love know that patient-specific treatment is long overdue. The outcome was nothing short of miraculous.

Somerville Public Schools did not reveal to HuffPost which school had the poster, but a statement to HuffPost from Mayor Joseph A. With limericks like, " Shut the lights off say no more ". " Go behind the desk and hide , wait until it's safe inside ".

Perkins signed up for Rosenberg's cancer trial knowing there were risks involved. She remains so up to now.

Immunotherapy pioneer Steven Rosenberg stressed that the approach, called adoptive cell therapy, is experimental and that several other patients who got the same treatments had not responded. On its own, the drug has rendered unremarkable results.

Two new breast cancer studies out this week.

BC Cancer and Dr. Chia had 30 to 40 patients take part in the study.

"We're going to find out a lot about what happens to the cancer when use these treatments", Dr. Harry Bear with VCU Massey Cancer Center said.

ACT has been shown to be effective in treating tumours with a high level of mutations such as melanoma, but has been less successful when tested in cancers with a lesser mutation load, such as stomach, oesophageal, ovarian, and breast cancers.

The study was funded by the National Cancer Institute, some foundations and proceeds from the US breast cancer postage stamp.
