Donald Trump says he may pardon late boxing champion Muhammad Ali

Kenny Thornton | 08 June, 2018, 17:37

President Donald Trump says he may pardon deceased boxing great Muhammad Ali, but an attorney for Ali says a pardon is not necessary.

Ali was convicted of draft evasion in 1967 after he refused to refused to fight in the Vietnam War.

This led to Ali's arrest and conviction, which was later overturned on appeal by the US Supreme Court.

"I'm thinking about Muhammed Ali", Trump told reporters on the south lawn of the White House.

Trump said that he wasn't thinking about pardoning either man, as neither has yet been convicted of a crime.

President Trump's reported obsession with his pardoning power shows no sign of letting up.

Ali cited his religious beliefs as the reason behind his decision to not take part in the draft for the Vietnam War. Earlier this week, Trump commuted the life sentence of a woman whose cause was championed by Kim Kardashian West.

Wrongful convictions have been erased with presidential pardons, but there is technically no longer a conviction on Ali's record. The US supreme court overturned the conviction of Muhammad Ali in a unanimous decision in 1971.

"I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali". "There is no conviction from which a pardon is needed".

Earlier this week, he also commuted the life sentence of a woman whose cause was championed by Kim Kardashian West.

In May, Trump granted a posthumous pardon to Jack Johnson, boxing's first black heavyweight champion, after being urged to do so by "Rocky" star Sylvester Stallone. He said he wants the athletes to tell him who they think has been treated unfairly by the justice system and he would consider pardoning them.

Trump has also previously floated pardoning Martha Stewart and a commuting the 14-year sentence for ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
