Just hours after issuing a series of aggressive messages about global trade and Canadian dairy practices, Donald Trump has arrived in Quebec to attend some of the G7 summit - his first visit to Canada as US president.
G7 leaders will pressure US President Donald Trump at a summit this week on tariffs he has imposed on metals imports but must remain civil as they try to persuade him to change his mind, French President Emmanuel Macronsaid today.
Mr Macron was speaking alongside Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, who is hosting the summit, and the pair signalled they would warn Mr Trump of the potential damage tariffs could cause the US.
"Getting ready to go to the G-7 in Canada to fight for our country on Trade (we have the worst trade deals ever made), then off to Singapore to meet with North Korea & the Nuclear Problem. But back home we still have the 13 Angry Democrats pushing the Witch Hunt!"
Macron called on other G7 leaders not to water down a joint communique at the end of the summit, at the expense of shared values, simply in an effort to win Trump's signature, warning that a "G6 plus one" outcome was possible. "Look forward to seeing them tomorrow".
"Take down your tariffs & barriers or we will more than match you!" At the same time we will not stop trying to convince our American friends, and President Trump, that undermining this order makes no sense at all, because it would only play into the hands of those who seek a new post-West order, where liberal democracy and fundamental freedoms would cease to exist.
"The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be", Macron tweeted, following similar rhetoric at a press conference with Trudeau.
But before leaving Washington, he made clear that he too has no intention of backing down on his plan to rebalance trade by imposing tariffs on steel, aluminum and other goods imported from U.S. allies.
Rep. Eliot Engel, the Democratic ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said Trump's invitation to Russian Federation fits into a broader pattern of the president cozying up to President Vladimir Putin.
Before arriving in Canada, British Prime Minister Theresa May called for fellow European Union leaders to take proportionate responses to the US tariffs and shrugged off a rebuff by Trump for a formal one-on-one meeting at the G-7.
Mr Trump's top economic adviser Larry Kudlow says other are counties are to blame for the current situation because they have taken advantage of the US.
For the past week, it was an open question in official Ottawa whether Trump would actually show up, given his recent trade actions against the other G7 countries and his increasingly antagonistic comments about their approach to worldwide relations.
But let's face it, in a $628 billion mutual trade relationship a $12 bn surplus on either side is trivial and certainly not worth having a trade war about.
