Police have been on the look out for a woman who was reportedly dragged into a pond by a 12-foot alligator while walking her dogs on Friday morning.

The lake at the nature park is sprawling and one of many.

Authorities from Broward County and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are on the scene, the Miami Herald reported.

Though alligator encounters are fairly common in Florida, the state averages only "about five unprovoked bites per year", the commission said.

"One of her dogs got bit by the gator", Engle said, adding that divers are now searching for the woman.

"I'm praying that nothing happened to her", Borelli said. Gallinal said the wildlife commission would take over the investigation.

Authorities closed the park Friday.

The same resident noted that there are plenty of gators in this lake, but said there aren't signs warning the public that gators are in the area.

Divers are searching for her in the water.

Alligators and humans have crossed paths more and more in Florida, as people increasingly seek waterfront homes and recreation - but fatal attacks remain rare. They are particularly active during their mating season in May and June. "They're at least [8-foot], 9-foot alligators".

Despite the reptiles' widespread presence, only 22 people have died in alligator attacks in Florida since 1948.
