Not only were students given donated shields, Saint Cornelius is now one of the first schools in the country to have its entire faculty armored with bulletproof protection.

The company said the backpack plates, which are quarter-inch thick and weigh 20 ounces, have shown to resist ammunition, including a 9 mm full metal jacket round, a.44 Magnum round, and birdshot fired from a 12-gauge shotgun.

Eighth graders at St Cornelius School in Chadds Ford have been given bullet proof shields for their backpacks as graduating gifts before heading off to high school.

According to their manufacturer, the shields would protect students from handgun and shotgun attacks if the students were shot from behind.

Caldwell told USA TODAY that Unequal's ballistic shield is created to be "kid friendly" - the shield can be slipped into a backpack to fortify it against gunfire.

School safety has been in the national headlines since a student killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, this February.

While Rosini told CNN affiliate WPVI it's unlikely a shooting will happen at her school, it's still important to protect her students.

"The students thought it was cool, but it was also a somber moment as they contemplated the reality of potential gun violence in their schools, which has tragically become the "new" normal", Vito told CNN in an email. "We just hope a kid never has to use (the shield)".

"You hear about these school shootings nearly weekly, and I can't believe that's where we are in our nation today, but that's the fact", said one great-grandparent. We can only protect them so far. "This product can make our kids safer".
