While we really appreciate the steps undertaken by Pakistan Navy to reduce plastic pollution, other organisations and industries also need to join the effort to make our environment totally clean from such hazardous waste.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government will observe the World Environment Day on June 5 - the theme of which is "Beat Plastic Pollution" - his home state is unclear about the ways to tackle the plastic menace.

"Implement the Extended Producer Responsibility programme where manufacturers must be held to account for the entire lifecycle of their consumer products", the statement read.

Speaking on the theme of this year Beat Plastic Pollution, Mr Modi said, "plastic pollution is already having a deadly impact on the ecosystem".

Take a selfie with a reusable alternative you're going to use in its place.

"But we can help", he continued, adding that despite being in a desperate situation to work upon its solid waste management, the world can still learn from India and India can learn from China and vice versa. India has set an example in beating plastic pollution at the world stage by showcasing best practices and innovations, he told PTI. Plastic in the sea is such a serious threat that it is considered one of the most serious environmental emergencies in the world.

Less than a 10th of all the plastic ever made has been recycled, and governments should consider banning or taxing single-use bags or food containers to stem a tide of pollution, a United Nations report says.

Caps on top: Washington wins Stanley Cup, beats Vegas 4-3
After decades of heartbreak, the Washington Capitals have finally reached the top. It was the first championship for a professional DC-based team in 26 years.

MicroplasticsIn a message for this year's World Environment Day, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed serious concern saying "our world is swamped by harmful plastic waste".

Elsewhere, however, things have not gone well and urgent action is needed. Delhi with 689.52 tonnes tops the chart of plastic waste followed by Chennai (429.39 tonnes), Mumbai (408.27 tonnes), Bengaluru (313.87 tonnes) and Hyderabad (199.33 tonnes).

Around 10 percent is incinerated without producing any energy and less than 10 percent ends up in landfill.

"Emphasising that a host of relevant resolutions, laws and bills have been passed on pollution and other environment-related issues, Harsh Vardhan said that it is up to the people to act upon them", an official release said quoting him.

"Every year, 500 billion plastic bags are used around the world, 13 million tonnes of plastic leak into the ocean and 17 million barrels of oil are used on plastic production".

Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photodegrade i.e. breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food web when animals accidentally ingest them.
