Muguruza condemns Sharapova to worst defeats

Halep got off to a poor start, with 10 unforced errors in the opening three games handing Kerber a double break.

Their French Open quarterfinal on Wednesday (Thursday NZ Time) was no contest at all, a 6-2 6-1 one-way journey.

Simona Halep celebrates her win over Angelique Kerber.

Halep pointed her right index finger at her temple when she eventually completed a 6-7 (2) 6-3 6-2 comeback to reach the semifinals, too. "I stayed focused. I never gave up. But today was not one of those steps". She led Jelena Ostapenko by a set and 3-0 in last year's final at Roland Garros. She says she rushed too much early.

The women got their matches done before rain arrived at Roland Garros, leaving the men's quarterfinals suspended in progress. Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro are even at 5-all in their opening-set tiebreaker.

Americans Madison Keys (13th seed) and Sloane Stephens (10th) face off in the other semifinal.

The two-time major victor, now 1-3 against Sharapova, last played the five-time major victor back in 2014.

Sharapova may have vast experience on the big stage, but three double faults gifted Muguruza - who only played two games of her fourth-round clash before Lesia Tsurenko retired with an injury - a break in a nervy opening game from the Russian. But Muguruza was relentless and brought up two set points with a scorching backhand victor before sealing the opening set with a clubbing forehand that Sharapova fended into the net.

Sharapova certainly didn't do that.

Considering she had never beaten Sharapova in three previous meetings Muguruza could have been excused some outpouring of emotion as the Russian dumped a backhand into the net on match point.

According to Page Six sources, Woods will stay on the yacht during the tournament, which is what he also did in 2006. Privacy will reportedly be docked in the Hamptons , giving the 42-year-old golfer an hour trip to Shinnecock Hills.

"Being aggressive is part of my game and when you're facing somebody who also has an aggressive style of game, I think it's about who takes the command, who takes the first opportunity", Muguruza told reporters afterwards.

She was also asked about Williams' comments ahead of their scheduled match that stories published in Sharapova's new autobiography were "hearsay".

Sharapova didn't need to play a point in the fourth round, because Serena Williams pulled out of their much-anticipated match with an injured chest muscle.

"Kind of a weird day", Muguruza said.

First, she'll have to get through the current No. 1, Simona Halep. The Spaniard, who won the 2016 French Open, stayed on course for her third Grand Slam title.

Halep, meanwhile, has participated in a trio of major finals, losing each.

With memories still fresh in the mind of their epic Australian Open semi-final in January, which Halep edged 9-7 in the third, they went to a decider.

Two-time major victor Kerber raced into a 4-0 lead in the first set before having to rely on a tiebreak to nudge her ahead.

Like Sharapova, Halep trailed 4-0 at the outset. She started going for less, adding a little more lift to her shots and letting Kerber make the mistakes. I just want to play as I did today, and as I did every day. "If I do that, I will be okay after the match, no matter the result".
